Family Law Facilitator/Self-Help Center Services
Effective March 19, 2020, the Sutter County Family Law Facilitator's Office and Self-Help Center will be closed to the public for in-person assistance until further notice. All previously scheduled clinics, in-person assistance and appointments are canceled.
However, we are still offering assistance by telephone from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at (530) 822-3305 and email assistance through E-Help. This is subject to change due to staff availability.
There are several Self-Help resources that can be accessed from anywhere with internet. The California Court's website has information on a variety of case types and issues, and court forms.
Odyssey Guide & File is a free program that guides a user through a series of questions with the goal of producing legal forms that may be printed, then filed with the court. The Odyssey Guide & File program is maintained by Tyler Technologies, a private company. Tyler Technologies is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the Sutter County Superior Court. This link is provided as a resource to the public. Please be advised that the programs provided by Guide & File are designed for statewide use and contain general instructions that may vary locally depending on the court where you file your forms. Additionally, there may be local forms that are required for filing but are not provided in the form sets produced by the Guide & File program. It is highly recommended that you review the Local Rules for more specific information and guidance before filing any forms with the court.
No one in the Self-Help Center/ Facilitator's Office may predict the outcome of your issues or case. Please do not incorrectly state or imply to others that the Self-Help Center or Facilitator has told you what you can expect from the court. The Self-Help Center / Facilitator does not represent anyone and may assist all parties in your case. Further, the information exchanged in this office is not confidential.
Family Law Facilitator
Family Law Facilitators are attorneys with experience in family law matters and who provide free assistance to unrepresented litigants regarding petitions, responses, Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) questions, child and spousal support calculations, motions, and general family law questions. The Facilitator's Office can help you with preparing your forms and can give you general information, but they cannot go with you to court, or give you legal advice.
The Family Law Facilitator is not your lawyer, but a neutral person who does not represent any party. There is no attorney-client relationship between you and the Facilitator. Communications between you and the Facilitator are not confidential. You should consult with your own attorney if you want personalized legal advice or strategy, have a confidential conversation, or to be represented by an attorney in court.
The Family Law Facilitator is not responsible for the outcome of your case.
Individual appointments with the facilitator are set up only after a consultation with the Self-Help Center staff.
The Self-Help Center provides assistance with the following case types:
- Child and Spousal Support
- Divorce/Legal Separation/Annulment
- Child Custody and Visitation
- Domestic Violence
The Self-Help Center provides free legal, procedural assistance to individuals without an attorney in the areas of Family Support, Domestic Violence, Family Law and Probate. All services are provided free of charge.
The Self-Help Center does not provide legal advice or representation, but we can provide referrals to local attorneys.
