ROLLERCOASTERS
A Curriculum for Children of Change
Sutter County Superior Court, Family Law Division, is proud to present "Rollercoasters",
a curriculum, for children of change. Rollercoasters is designed for children
ages 5 to 12 who have experienced a "Rollercoaster" of change in their
family due to separation, divorce, or re-marriage.
Each group will meet for one hour (5:30pm to 630pm) at Yuba City High School,
Room 823. There is no fee to enroll or complete this course; all materials are
provided free of charge. The class size is limited to 10 children per class. Your
child/children's attendance is mandatory; please make the proper arrangements.
Parents are not permitted on site during class session.
The instructors for Rollercoasters are Phyllis Brokaw, M.A., an Instructor
with Marysville Joint Unified School District, and Carrie Barlean, an Intervention
Counselor with Yuba-Sutter Mental Health.
METHODS/TIME FRAMES
1. Instruction will be done in a specific age related basis. Children will
be divided into two groups: ages five to eight and ages nine to twelve.
2. Each group will meet for one hour for eight weeks.
3. The proposed times are to be from 5:30 to 6:30.
4. Age groups will be instructed on separate nights. Ages five to eight will
be instructed on Monday evenings and ages nine to twelve will be instructed
on Tuesday evenings. A timeframe for the proposed first two sessions is as follows:
Group 1: TBA
Group 2: TBA
5. Parents will not be admitted to the group process, though they will be informed
as to the design and the lesson plan of the eight week course. If circumstances
arise, both instructors are mandated reporters.
6. The proposed group size by the Rollercoasters manual is from six to eight
students based on their age group. It is proposed the five to eight year old
age group be at six students and the nine to twelve year old age group be at
eight students.
7. The proposed groups will be closed groups. New members will be serviced in
the following eight week class cycle.
8. Pre and post tests will be utilized with each group. The effectiveness of
utilizing the Rollercoasters materials and the proper teaching styles will be
assessed at the end of each eight week class with reports to the Family Intervention
Team.
